II Kings 22:3,8,10
And it came to pass in the eighteenth year of king Josiah, that the king sent
Shaphan the son of Azaliah, the son of Meshullam, the scribe, to the house of
the LORD, … And Hilkiah the high priest said unto Shaphan the scribe, I have
found the book of the law in the house of the LORD. And Hilkiah gave the book
to Shaphan, and he read it. And Shaphan the scribe shewed the king, saying,
Hilkiah the priest hath delivered me a book. And Shaphan read it before the
king. Hezekiah was a good king, but his son and his grandson were wicked.
Hezekiah should have spent more time teaching them the right way. But
Hezekiah’s great-grandson was Josiah, and he was a good king. Josiah began to reign as king when he was
only eight years old! Scripture mentions his mother, Jedidah, by name. She must
have been a good influence upon Josiah and upon his kingdom. When Josiah was
eighteen years old, he set about cleaning up and repairing the Temple of God.
It took money and work to repair the crumbling house of God, because it had
been neglected for two generations! While Hilkiah, the priest was cleaning out
debris, he found a copy of the Book of the Law of God. He gave it to Shaphan,
who read it to Josiah. And that led to the revival under good King Josiah! A
return to God always begins with a return to reading God’s Word. God’s Word
will bring a change in our lives - if we will read it. God’s Word is powerful!
