II Kings 11:1-3 And
when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and
destroyed all the seed royal. But Jehosheba, the daughter of king Joram, sister
of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him from among the king's
sons which were slain; and they hid him, even him and his nurse, in the
bedchamber from Athaliah, so that he was not slain. And he was with her hid in
the house of the LORD six years. And Athaliah did reign over the land. Ahaziah
was a wicked king and God removed him from his throne. When Jehu shot Joram in
the back as he fled, the soldiers took out after Ahaziah as well. They injured
him such that he dids and his body was taken back to Jerusalem to be buried in
the family tomb. When his mother saw that her son was dead, she proceeded to
take over in his place. Queen Athaliah ordered her soldiers to kill all of her
grandchildren, nieces and nephews - absolutely anyone who had any claim to the
throne. She was a wicked woman and God’s priest, Jehoiada, knew she was bad. But
there wasn’t much that he could do - not just yet. Queen Athaliah’s
daughter-in-law, Jehosheba, rescued one of her baby nephews from the murderous
soldiers and Jehoiada hid him in the Temple. They couldn’t stop Athaliah’s
rampage, but they did what they could. They rescued little baby Joash and
prayed to the Lord in heaven for safety - for them and for him. And God granted
their request. God watched over little Joash for the next six years and blessed
the faithfulness of Jehosheba and Jehoiada.
