I learned an interesting thing looking out the kitchen window this morning. I have two bird feeders that I keep full of black oil sunflower seeds and a swinging suet feeder with woodpecker blend in it. A robin was sitting on the deck rail a few feet from the hanging suet feeder when a woodpecker flew up, latched onto the wire (upside down) and ate a few tidbits from the suet block. The robin just watched. The woodpecker got an embedded seed and flew away to a safer perch to enjoy its breakfast. But the robin couldn’t enjoy breakfast because the surface of the ground was frozen. So, the robin flew to the suet feeder and tried to grab hold and get a bite of food. But it failed and fell fluttering to the ground. It tried two more times before it gave up and flew away, probably looking for a sunny patch of ground to hunt for worms. I watched and reflected. When I was a rookie teacher in 1977, I tried to emulate my mentor, Carol Calvert (rest In peace). But the good Lord hadn’t made me like Miss Calvert; he had given me a different temperament and s different skillset. It took a few years for me to find my teaching style. And I trust that I have been a blessing to students over the years. Paul said in Romans om 12:4-6, “For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us …” The Lord has made you unique with a unique heredity and a unique upbringing. Do your best to serve God and serve one another. Like the robin on my back deck rail, watch, learn, try, repeat … until you find your place in the body of Christ.
