Matthew 5:1-3

Matthew 5:1-3 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Here in Matthew chapter five is the Sermon of the Mount. Many people came to Jesus to hear Him teach and to get the free food that they had heard about. But for whatever reason that they were there, Jesus taught them. And His teaching was not like the Pharisees; Jesus taught with true wisdom and knowledge. They didn’t realize that Jesus was the Son of God and had actually written all of the Old Testament! He knew it because He wrote it! And Jesus’ teaching was different. His teaching spoke to the heart. It wasn’t enough what you did and how you acted. Jesus spoke to the heart attitudes. Not just what we do but why we do it. Jesus first statement was that we need to be poor in spirit, not proud or braggie. Our attitude should be one of humility. After all, everything that we have was given to us by God. He should receive glory, not us!
