Hebrews 11:1 Now
faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
The writer of the book of Hebrews uses four impossible things. The words substance
and evidence
are hard, cold facts. And the words hoped for and not seen are foggy,
untouchable ideas. But the writer uses substance with hoped for and evidence
with not
seen. this just doesn’t make
sense! How can you have something that is solid substance, and say that
it is hoped for, like you aren’t sure about it at all. Well, which is
it? Substance
or hoped
for? And then something like evidence that is used in a court of
law, but not seen, like you can’t even see it? Well that is exactly what
faith is. Faith is real – but you can’t see it. You can really count on faith –
but you are just hoping for it. But where does faith come from? Or I should
say, Who does faith come from? That’s right, faith comes from God. So, can you
see God? Well, no. But is God real? Well, yes. So what is the solid evidence … that
we can’t see? Faith! And what is the solid evidence … that we only hope for?
Once again, faith! God is real. Faith is real. And we can depend upon God and
upon our faith in God. God will never, ever fail!
