Leviticus 3:1-3 And
if his oblation be a sacrifice of peace offering, if he offer it of the herd;
whether it be a male or female, he shall offer it without blemish before the
LORD. And he shall lay his hand upon the head of his offering, and kill it at the
door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and Aaron's sons the priests shall
sprinkle the blood upon the altar round about. And he shall offer of the
sacrifice of the peace offering an offering made by fire unto the LORD …
God’s instructions for the sacrifices made by the Children of Israel were very
specific. God was showing them that His dear Son, Jesus, would one day die for
their sins. So their sacrifice had to be a perfect animal. Just like Jesus
Christ is perfect. The person bringing the sacrifice would lay his hand upon
the head of the animal to signify that their sins were laid upon that animal
sacrifice. And Jesus was our substitute on the cross of Calvary. We deserved to
die on that cross, but Jesus took our place. And finally, the priests would
sprinkle the blood of the sacrifice upon the altar. Jesus Christ shed His blood
to pay for our sins. Those Old Testament sacrifices were brutal and bloody, but
so were our sins. Our sins are wicked in God’s sight. God cannot even stand to
look upon our sins. God hates sin. But Jesus Christ paid for our sins, once and
for all. Through Jesus Christ, our fellowship with God is restored. Because of
Jesus, we have peace with God.
