Leviticus 5:15,16
If a soul commit a trespass, and sin through ignorance, in the holy things of
the LORD; then he shall bring for his trespass unto the LORD a ram without
blemish out of the flocks, with thy estimation by shekels of silver, after the
shekel of the sanctuary, for a trespass offering: And he shall make amends for
the harm that he hath done in the holy thing, and shall add the fifth part
thereto, and give it unto the priest: and the priest shall make an atonement
for him with the ram of the trespass offering, and it shall be forgiven him.
Have you seen No Trespassing signs? What do they mean? That’s right, they
mean that you aren’t allowed to go onto the property that is marked with the No
Trespassing signs. But what if someone tears down the No
Trespassing signs? You may go hiking in the area not knowing that you
are trespassing on private property. So, are you still trespassing? Are you
still in the wrong? Yes, you are. So if we sin and don’t know that it is wrong,
have we still sinned? Have we disobeyed God? Yes, we have. And that is what our
verses are talking about. If the Children of Israel sinned but didn’t know that
it was sin, and later they were told that what they were doing was sin, they
were still guilty of the sin. This was called a sin of ignorance. Ignorance
means that you just didn’t know. So did God just let them slide by because they
didn’t know that it was a sin? No, He didn’t. They had to bring a sacrifice.
They had to make amends and they had to add a fifth part
extra. God expects us to be informed and to know what is right and what is
wrong. So how can we know what is right and what is wrong? Right, by reading
the Bible. And when we make amends for our sins, we must restore what we
wrongfully did plus a little more to make things right. God hates sin, but God
loves sinners. But it is our responsibility to confess our sins and to get
forgiveness for our sins from our loving, forgiving God.
