Leviticus 25:10 And
ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land
unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall
return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his
family. Every seven years, the farmers were to let their cropland alone. It
was to remain fallow for the entire year. That meant that the Israelites were
not to harvest any wheat or grapes for the entire year. They just had to plan
ahead. That allowed the land to naturally replenish its nutrients. But then
after seven sevens of years – after forty-nine years – they were to celebrate
the Year of Jubilee. This was a wonderful year of celebration. Any land that
had been sold returned to the original owner. Any slave would be set free. It
was a time to reset the economy. What a happy time it was for the poor of
Israel. And this verse, Leviticus 25:10 is written on the Liberty Bell in
Philadelphia. It was a time of freedom for Israel, and it was a time of freedom
for America! Let freedom ring!
