I am intrigued by ants. They work together to find food, to collect food, to take care of infants, and to build complex nests. In my driveway, ants travel twenty feet from their dirt home by the fence to my garbage can to get food. That would be like me walking 9/10 of a mile while carrying 4,000 lbs. on my back! These ants are so tiny but they have a mind of their own. They know what to do and how to get it done. So, … my oldest daughter gave me a secondhand book for Christmas. An odd gift, you might think, but it was published 35 years ago and is out of print. It is by a Dutch artist with English calligraphy text. The book is titled, He Was One of Us. The sketches and text explain how Jesus Christ divested himself of his glory (but not His deity) to become one of us. What a puzzling but thrilling thought. God became man: Emmanuel, “God with us.” Matthew 1:23 and Isaiah 7:14. Just like me becoming an ant, Jesus Christ became a man. What a wonderful concept: He Was One of Us.
