Exodus 10:21,22 And
the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand toward heaven, that there may
be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt. And Moses
stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all
the land of Egypt three days: The ninth plague was the plague of darkness.
This is interesting because Pharaoh claimed to be the representative of Ra, the
sun god of the Egyptians. Because of this oppressive darkness for three days,
everyone saw that Pharaoh was powerless over the God of Moses. And this was no
ordinary darkness; it was a darkness that could be felt. No one could move
around because the darkness was so thick. Everything came to a stop. Ra, the
sun god of the Egyptians, could not ride his chariot upon high each day as the
Egyptians thought. The God of Moses was supreme over the false gods of Egypt.
And this was Pharaoh’s last chance to repent. The tenth and final plague that
was coming would be the worst. But Pharaoh didn’t repent. He was stubborn right
up to the end. God was not only teaching Pharaoh a lesson, God was teaching all
of the Egyptians a lesson and teaching the Children of Israel a lesson as well.
God would protect Israel and God would judge the Egyptians. Both were important
lessons.
