Acts 9:4-6 And he (Saul)
fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why
persecutest thou me? And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am
Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And
he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the
Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what
thou must do. Saul had been a witness at the stoning of Stephen. He was
trying to do the right thing, and was trying to put a stop to these Jesus
followers. But what he didn’t know was that Jesus was after him! God wanted
Saul, whose name was changed to Paul, to be a choice follower of Him. Saul was
out to get the Christians in Damascus, but God stopped him on the way! While
they were riding from Jerusalem to Damascus, a bright light shined and God
spoke to Saul. Saul replied by asking Who He was. God replied that He was Jesus,
Whom Saul was persecuting. Jesus used the example of a horse kicking against the pricks, or the spurs of the rider. The horse may not want to do what the rider is telling him to do, but it is hard to kick up against the spurs, because the horse just will not win. So the best thing for the horse to do is to give up and obey his master. Jesus told Saul to give up and to
obey Him! And Saul did! Saul was told to go to Damascus and look for a
Christian named Ananias, who would tell him what to do. God was already working
on Ananias and he would soon be ready to talk to Saul, God’s choice
preacher-to-be!
