Mark 1:16-18

Mark 1:16-18 Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men. And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him. The word straightway means immediately. I don’t know if Simon Peter and Andrew already knew Jesus or not, but I do know that they didn’t waste any time making their decision: they were immediately followers of Jesus. And the next verse says that James and John followed Jesus too. I am also sure that Jesus wasn’t a wimp. These were rough, strong fishermen and they didn’t hesitate to follow Jesus. Jesus had grown up as a carpenter, so he had big, strong arms. He felt right at home with these working men. And Jesus told them their mission: they were to be fishers of men. By the way, that’s our job too. We should go out and hunt for men to get to follow Jesus. So, does this fishers of men mean that Jesus wasn’t interested in women too? Well of course not! But Jesus knew that if He got the man of the house, he would have the wife and the children too. What a shame it is when kids come to church without their parents! And what a shame it is when wives come to church without their husbands. Even today, Jesus is looking for real men to follow Him. So stand up; be a man; follow Jesus!
