Mark 2:21

Mark 2:21 No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse. Jesus told this parable to show that it was time for people to make a change. Jesus was preaching the New Testament Gospel of Salvation by grace alone. The Jews were used to keeping the Old Testament Law and doing good works. But Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament law, and Jesus Himself was the new way of salvation. This new way was radically different than the old way! Jesus explained that it was like trying to sew a new patch on an old garment. It just wouldn’t work. The strong new cloth would actually tear the old garment that it was trying to fix. They just wouldn’t go together. The Old Testament Law and works just wouldn’t work with Jesus and His salvation by grace alone. The old needed to be done away with and the new replacing it. We don’t need a new patch on our old clothes; we need all new clothes! And Jesus is the new! He is the radically new way to God. We can have peace with God and salvation from our sins ... in Jesus Christ alone!
