It’s in human nature to be critical of others. And it’s also in human nature for us to make excuses for ourselves. We allow ourselves a pass while we have higher expectations of others. And Jesus knew those two inconsistencies when He said in Matthew 7:1&2, “Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.” My former pastor, Dr. Fred Andrews, was a serious Georgia football fan. And he had all of the memorabilia that went with being a fan. But he never made brash predictions from the pulpit about Georgia winning. He said, “On any given Saturday, any team can beat any other team, no matter how good they may think that they are. That’s why they play the game. If I don’t make outlandish predictions about my team going to win, I won’t have to make excuses about why they lost.” Hey, let’s be a little kinder to others and a little harsher on ourselves. If we do, God may be a little easier as He judges us. But actually, He always is.
