I was at Hobby Lobby last week leaving the parking lot when a man and his little girl walked by. They were walking between me and the next car, and the dad stopped his daughter to let me back out. I enjoyed watching the dad teaching the little girl how to be careful in a parking lot. But then I realized that I was the one who was the danger and the dad was cautioning the girl to watch out for the old man in the old Buick. I went from being warmed to being embarrassed. How often in life do we not realize that we are the problem?! We have difficulty with the boss or trouble with our spouse. Our children are cross-ways with us or our friends seem stand-offish. Could the root of the problem be us?! Like Pogo in the funny papers said, “We have met the enemy, and he is us!” The apostle Paul was insightful in Philippians 2:3, “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.” Hey, try something different today: don’t be first. Don’t be the funniest, don’t have the best story, and don’t be the loudest. Try to let others be first. And that may be a first for you.
