Gypsies in Sighisoara

In November 2004 I took a group of Americans to the little village of Bazna in central Romania.  Jerry and Johnnie Jones were my age and from Alabama.  They were fearless in their driving on the narrow Romania roads, which was a good thing.  They drove and we prayed, and we usually got where we were going ahead of time.  We had about 900 John/Romans Scripture portions printed and handed them out wherever we went.  Johnnie had a fervor for evangelism.  The pastor’s wife, Rodica Manta, taught English in a high school in Sighisoara near the village of Bazna where we were staying.  Rodica asked Johnnie to speak to her English class on any topic that he wanted to.  She just wanted her class to hear how an American talked.  In his southern drawl, Johnnie spoke briefly about his home and family in Birmingham, Alabama.  But he quickly got to his salvation experience and the importance of Jesus Christ in his life.  He gave a full gospel witness and then proceeded to hand out John/Romans to each of the students.  Whenever we stopped along the way for a soft drink or a rest, Johnnie was the first to get out the Scriptures and begin handing them out.  He would not take “No” for an answer.  Everyone got a John/Romans.  One afternoon I was tired and weary, but we were pestered by four gypsies who wanted money.  Johnnie jumped right out of the van and gave them some trinkets that he had along with a John/Romans Scripture portion.  He shook their hands, gave them high fives, and had fun with them.  When we left, they were waving goodbye to their new American friend.  I don’t know if they could read, but I pray that they found someone who could read the Word of God to them.  God told about His powerful Words in Isaiah 55:11, “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”  We need to get God’s Word to people and let it do its work.  It has the power to change lives!
