Fire is a wonderful thing. It can keep you warm in the winter; it can warm up your food; it can give light and comfort on a dark night. But when fire gets out of control, it can burn down your house, set the forest ablaze, and burn your hands. The same with the tongue. James compares the tongue to a fire in James as 3:5&6, “Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.” Have you ever been cut down by someone with a sharp tongue? Or worse, have you cut down someone with your sharp tongue? James said in verse 2, “… If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man …” Hey, no one’s perfect. It’s hard to control your tongue. But today, try to improve just a little bit. Ask the dear Lord to help you guard your tongue today, and let me know how it goes … but only if you make progress.
