Holy Joe

When I was a kid, I read a tract by Jack Chick entitled, “Holy Joe”.  It was a cartoon tract about a Christian in the army who was heckled by the soldiers in his platoon.  Late one evening, he had his flashlight on and was quietly reading his Bible.  One of the men saw him, notified the others, and suddenly he was pummeled with everyone’s boots followed by laughter.  But in the morning, the men discovered their boots returned to them clean and polished by “Holy Joe”.  That tract made an impression on me.  This morning I heard a sermon on the radio about young David and King Saul.  Saul tried to pin David to the wall with a javelin, not once, but twice!  And David still hung around!  The radio preacher remarked that David could have retrieved the javelin and thrown it back at Saul, but he didn’t.  The reason that David didn’t retaliate was that he knew the future … and Saul wasn’t in it.  Samuel had already anointed David to be the next king.  David was patient and waited on the good Lord’s perfect timing.  Hey, how often do we bristle when we are wronged instead of patiently taking the abuse?!  Are we not willing to suffer wrong for the Lord?  Do we not remember that God has said in Romans 12:19, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”?  Hey, try turning the other cheek today and trust in the dear Lord to avenge you.  Why not show restraint today.  And why not start your restraint by being careful what you post on facebook.  Hmmmm?
