Mission Creep

I saw an interesting post yesterday.  It said, “Order milkweed seeds from TDOT for this fall.  Monarch butterflies have decreased 90% since 1992.  tnpollinators.org”  So … I’m not sure what I think about this.  On one level, I do care about Monarch butterflies, who feed only on milkweed plants.  And Monarch butterflies migrate through Tennessee each year.  But on another level, actually planting milkweed seeds?!  Really?!  And then these seeds are propagated, processed, and shipped to me - free of charge - by the Tennessee Department of Transportation?!  I thought that TDOT’s job was roads?!  This is called “mission creep”; the roads department gets involved in an area not connected to their real mission.  Hey, do we as Christians also have “mission creep”?  Our mission is the mission of Jesus Christ.  Jesus said in Luke 19:10, “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”  Jesus fed the hungry, healed the sick, caused the blind to see, but those good deeds were not His real mission; His real mission was to save the lost!  We should protest abortion, we should speak out against human trafficking, we should provide shelter and food for the homeless, but all of those good things are not our real mission.  We should reach the lost.  And that’s nor my opinion; that’s what Jesus said!  Hey, do good things for your fellow man, but do the best thing for him; tell him about Jesus, his only way to heaven.
