Babies

I remember when my daughter turned one year old … in 1973, a “few” years ago!  We had a big party with several guests invited.  But she didn’t care.  She was only one year old and barely aware of what was going on.  I remember how wide her eyes got when we put the cake on her highchair tray.  I said, “Go ahead, Becky, dig right in, it’s your birthday.”  She was excited and puzzled at the same time.  Usually, she had to be clean and neat at mealtime.  But her parents were actually encouraging her to put her hands into her cake!  But once she got the hang of it, she really enjoyed into it!  And when she tasted the icing on her little fingers, her eyes lit up!  After the pictures, she had to be cleaned up from head to toe.  Those were fun times!  But, when she has a birthday this August, I would think it strange if she were to put her hands into her birthday cake and rub the icing all over her face.  I might even think she were crazy.  That’s because she is grown up and knows better how to behave.  Hey, the same is true of our spiritual life.  We begin as a baby Christian knowing very little about the Christian life.  But as we read the Bible, as we pray to the dear Lord, and as we grow in knowledge, we mature.  Peter said in II Peter 3:18, “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”  Hey, babies are cute and baby-like antics are cute.  But don’t remain a baby Christian.  Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
