Cleaning

Tuesday I was painting shelving for the school library, and it seems that I got paint all over both hands.  I washed my hands off outside using an old rag, but later I found paint under my nails and around my nailbed.  I scrubbed and scrubbed in the shower that night to get my hands clean.  And I thought that they were, but when I was combing my hair Wednesday morning looking in the mirror, I found another patch of paint on the back side of my right hand!  It seems that there was no end of paint … and there’s no end of wickedness in unregenerate folk.  Jesus related a story in Matthew 12:43-45, “When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.”  If you attempt self-improvement, you will actually end up worse than before.  The best plan of action is to lay it all out at the feet of Jesus in repentance and let Jesus do the cleaning up.  He can do a better, more through job that you ever can.
