Waiting is not easy, especially for us Americans. I hate waiting for a doctor’s visit. I hate waiting in line for a seat at a popular restaurant. I especially hate waiting in line after I eat to pay for the meal. When I coached high school basketball, I would remind the boys sitting on the bench to be ‘in the game’ while they were waiting. Watch the player in the position that they would be guarding when their opportunity came and they got into the game. I cautioned them to be mentally ready for when their name was called, because they would suddenly be in the game with no time to prepare. Psalm 27:14, “Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.” We as Christians should be praying, studying the Bible, and ready to obey when the Lord calls us into action. But while we are waiting, we are called to “wait upon the Lord” and to be sharpening our skills. Don’t be doing nothing while you are doing nothing; be watching and waiting while you are waiting on the Lord … if you know what I mean. And if you have been preparing, when the dear Lord calls you into action, you will be ready.
