Saturday morning, I was folding a load of clean laundry, and I looked down at the socks when I noticed an odd color in my beard. After closer examination in a mirror, I discovered some bright yellow egg yolk left over from breakfast. Oops. Glad I caught it before I left the house. My faux pas reminded me of what Pastor Jamie read during communion last Sunday evening. The apostle Paul reminded the church in Corinth (and future generations of churches) in I Corinthians 11:28, “But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.” And Paul’s advice was exactly what I needed, because if I examine myself (the egg-on-the-beard) I will not be embarrassed later when I meet people. And more important than my outward appearance is my inward spirit. Am I right with God? Am I right with my fellow Christian brothers and sisters? Paul went on to say in verse 31, “For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.” Self-evaluation is better than others noticing our faults … whether it is a spiritual fault or egg on a beard.
