Picture Frame

I have several nice pictures hanging at my house.  Each of them has been carefully chosen for their color, their subject, and their execution.  I like them.  But to be honest, I couldn’t tell you (from memory) what their frames look like.  I just don’t notice the frames.  But the frames are important.  The frame compliments the style of the picture.  An elegant picture calls for an elegant frame.  A modern picture requires a modern frame.  And the frame should always enhance the picture, not overpower it.  If you notice the frame before you notice the picture, the frame is not well matched to the picture.  The same is true of the spiritual life.  Our job is to focus attention upon Jesus Christ, not upon ourselves.  John the Baptist said it simply and perfectly in John 3:30, “He must increase, but I must decrease.”  The focus should be upon Jesus Christ and not upon us: we are the frame and Jesus is the picture.
