OK, I’ll admit it, I am an English grammar geek. Pastor Jamie was preaching last Sunday afternoon, and the Holy Spirit led me down this rabbit hole of spiritual thought. I’m just sayin’ it’s not my fault. So, here are 3 verses: Luke 24:46-48, “And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things.” These three wonderful verses are at the end of the book of Luke, and each verse uses an interesting verb. A verb is a word that shows action or otherwise helps to make a statement. The first verb is in the first verse and is “behoved” which means duty or responsibility. Because of God’s choice before the worlds were made, Jesus put upon Himself the responsibility to redeem us! The second verb in the second verse is “should”. Should is a helping verb modifying or limiting “be preached,” indicating the responsibility upon us (as Christians) to preach the Gospel. Hey, we “should” preach the Gospel … our responsibility! And the third verb in the third verse is in the middle of the phrase, “ye are witnesses.” This verse (verb) flat out says that we “are” witnesses … the question is, what kind of a witness are we?! Are we a faithful witness, or are we a fearful witness? Are we timid to speak out about Jesus Christ, or do we boldly proclaim that we are followers of Jesus Christ?! So, because of God’s wonderful choice, and our serious responsibility, what kind of a witness will you be today?
