What Is Important?

An interesting discovery was made at Pompeii, Italy in 1911.  Workmen who were digging a foundation for a new building found the body of a woman which had been buried in volcanic ash and petrified.  Both hands were full of jewels.  Evidently the woman was fleeing from the volcano eruption that destroyed Pompeii in 79 A.D.  Curiously, she was found with her hands full of her precious jewelry.  Each finger had multiple rings on them.  The jewels are excellently preserved, consisting of bracelets, necklaces, rings, amulets studded with gems and a pair of earrings, which were unique. Each earring contained 21 perfect pearls, set in gold, imitations of bunches of grapes.  Evidently, when the volcano erupted, the woman took the time to gather up her precious jewels.  Her hesitation probably cost her life.  Many people survived, but many didn’t, including this bejeweled lady, who thought her valuables were more important than her life.  Jesus said in Matthew 16:26, “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”  Hey, are you clinging to jewelry, cars, phones, houses, school diplomas or Christmas presents?  Please stop and examine your life.  You will face your Maker very soon.  Why not plan for that meeting?
