Lessons from the Blackberry Patch

Today I went blackberry picking and came away with more than berries.  I learn many life principles while I was at it.  Good things come with hard work.  It was 95° and high humidity.  Typical for a day when blackberries are ripe.  It takes time to get something done.  Blackberries are small and take time to pick.  There will always be adversity.  Blackberry canes have stickers all over them.  It is worth the effort.  My wife has promised to bake us a blackberry cobbler.  Yummy!  It is easier to get into trouble than to get out of trouble.  Blackberry stickers grow backwards on the canes and stems.  The easiest way to get out of being caught is to push your hand back into the thicket and then work your hand out carefully.  Be persistent; don’t give up.  Blackberries are small and it takes many to fill up a quart jar.  Little tasks add up to a productive life.  Don’t give up!  Look for the ripe fruit.  Don’t pick the unripe ones (red), the red ones will be ripe in a few days.  Be patient; they will ripen.  In life keep working on problems.  Time will help to resolve them.  King Solomon said of labor in Ecclesiastes 2:24, “There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.”  I’m not sure that Solomon knew anything about labor, but the dear Lord does, and He put these words in the heart of Solomon to write.  I know I will enjoy the Blackberry cobbler this evening with ice cream and thank the good Lord for His provisions: for the blackberry patch and for the grocery store.  All are from the hand of the Lord.
