The Lottery

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I take my dear wife to dialysis at 5 am.  After I see her into the building I usually go straight home and back to bed.  But on the way home, I pass a dark billboard sign that has the lottery jackpots lit up in bright red lights.  The jackpots of Powerball and Mega millions are usually about the same.  But sometimes one inches higher than the other.  And when it does, no one buys the other smaller jackpot while everyone buys tickets for the lottery that is climbing in value.  And when the jackpot tops $100,000,000 it gains momentum.  Everyone wants to become an instant millionaire.  But few do.  You are 80 times more likely to be bitten by a shark and 250 times more likely to be struck by lightning than to win the lottery!  But folk still buy the tickets.  King Solomon could have said of the lottery in Proverbs 23:5, “Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.”  Hey, if you play the lottery, your money just “takes wings and flies away”.  And Solomon wrapped it all up and tied it in a bow in Ecclesiastes 12:13&14, “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.”  Good words, Mr. Solomon, good words.
