A Chance Encounter

I went by Costco Saturday to see what free food samples they were giving away.  If they had some good ones, I was going to fill up on the samples and buy a 99¢ Pepsi to wash them down.  But, alas, they only had freeze-dried seaweed, dishwasher samples, and lemon cleanser packets.  Bummer.  On my way to the food counter, I stopped to look for a pair of brown dress slacks, but they only had skinny-waist sizes … not real-men-waist sizes (like my 36” waist).  But as I was looking, a man beside me asked, “What are the two most important days in your life?”  I was startled by such a great lead-in question!  I couldn’t have asked for a better witness opportunity!  So, I chose my words carefully and said, “Probably the day of my birth,” and he nodded.  Then he said, “Mark Twain said that the day of his birth and the day that he discovered his purpose in life were the two most important days in his life.”  And with that, he smiled at his own cleverness.  I paused briefly and added, “The three most burning questions that a man can ask is, Where did I come from?  What is my purpose in life?  And where am I going when I die?”  Now it was the man’s turn to be surprised.  I had thought that he was going to witness to me, but I realized that he was only an intellectual fellow who wanted to impress someone (me) with his wisdom.  I spoke to him about the hopelessness of evolutionary ideas and the relevance of the Bible, the Word of God.  But he brought up reincarnation and I mumbled “Buddhism”.  We chatted for a minute more, but he had used up all of his wisdom, so he said, “Let me get out of this shopper’s way,” and he moved on.  He didn’t give me enough time to say much, but at least I gave him a ‘vote for God.’  Paul said in I Corinthians 1:25, “Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.”  Pray that Maurice will think about his eternal destiny.  Hey, perhaps you should too.
