Fishing in the Back Yard

A couple of weeks ago, I went fishing in the back yard.  I didn’t fish for fish, I fished for BB’s.  And I didn’t use a fishing pole; I used a magnet from a speaker that I had in the basement.  My grandsons like to shoot the BB guns.  When they come over to my house, the first thing that they do is to get out the BB guns.  The same rules that apply to real guns apply to the BB guns, so the boys have learned gun safety while using BB guns.  I started with a metal target, and we graduated to a more challenging smaller target the size of my little fingernail that we made from a flattened horseshoe nail.  And Bennett can hit that tiny target from 15 yards, 9 out of 10 times!  But I have bought thousands of BB’s over the years, which are still in the pine needles, hence my BB fishing magnet.  I tied a cord onto the magnet and dragged it around systematically over the pine needles and BB’s popped right through the pine needles onto the powerful magnet.  Well, at least some did.  The boys thought it was great fun.  But we only collected about 50 BB’s.  Most of them had settled down too deep in the pine needle cover.  My lack of results didn’t bother the boys; they liked the idea of BB fishing.  And they enjoyed my Rube Goldberg invention.  Psalm 127:3-5, “Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD ... As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them …”  My children and grandchildren are my heritage.  May I teach them to love life and to love God, is my prayer.
