The Old North Church in Boston (the same church made famous by the lanterns that signaled Paul Revere) opened in 1723. Since it was located within the city limits, no land was available for a cemetery. So, in 1732, church members began to be buried in crypts beneath the church building. After 37 tombs there was no more room, so coffins had to share tombs. As the wooden coffins would rot (along with the bodies inside) other coffins were put in on top of the rotted remains. Eventually 1100 bodies shared the 37 tombs! The only tomb not reused was that of smallpox victims. No one was brave enough (or stupid enough) to reopen a smallpox tomb. Can you imagine the nastiness held within those tombs? Hey, the prophet Isaiah describes our “righteousness” before a Holy God as “putrefying rags” - rags that might have been found in those tombs. Isaiah 64:6, “But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” Before God, all of us are unworthy! But Jesus Christ has redeemed us and made us clean before Almighty God! If we but accept the atonement of Jesus Christ, we can be made as clean as the driven snow!
